In this 4-Week Modern Calligraphy course you will learn the fundamentals of pointed pen calligraphy and the art of beautiful writing from Michelle Khaw, the founder of Willow Rose. By the end of the course you will be confident in writing in the modern calligraphy style and you will be able to create beautiful calligraphy gifts for your friends and family.

This course is suitable for complete beginners or those with basic experience.

Light refreshments will be provided each week. 

There are limited tickets available and the next course intake will be in Autumn 2022.

4 March : Week 1 – The Basics : All the tips and tricks to get you going on the right foot! We work through tools, equipment, calligraphy drills, lower case alphabets, numbers and punctuation

11 March : Week 2 – Connections & Words : Explore writing upper case alphabets before moving onto ways to join letters into words, including tricky transitions

18 March : Week 3 – Adding Style : Nib exploration, tips to develop consistency in your calligraphy, adding beautiful style through bounce lettering and flourishing

25 March : Week 4 – Composition, Illustrations & Final Projects : Starting off with a pangram before working on design hierarchy, building a layout and adding illustrations. Two final projects – calligraphy quote for your wall/photo frame and a beautiful handwritten poem

Finding OPEN in Dickens Yard

If you have never been to OPEN before, when you get to Dickens Yard, we are the same end as the Church, Gail’s Bakery and Brew Dog. School Lane is the “walk way” to the left of Bar #17 which looks like it is going to flats. We are along there on the left. If you reach Gym Box – you’ve just missed us!

About the tutor

Michelle Khaw

Michelle Khaw has been lettering since 2014 and has taught hundreds of people how to create beautiful lettering in the style of modern calligraphy. She fell in love with lettering & calligraphy and learned from some amazing lettering artists, including Martina Flor, Shinah Chang of Crooked Calligraphy, Shaochen Wu of Monstera Gold, Imogen Owen and more. 

Originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Michelle has lived in Ealing for over 10 years and has her studio, Willow Rose, in the Borough.

She describes her calligraphy and illustration style as minimalist, simple and clean; and she is a big fan of using her calligraphy to create signage and stationery for weddings.
