Who is William Kentridge?
He is South Africa’s most celebrated living artist and has an unmissable retrospective show of his works to date at the Royal Academy of Arts in London until the 11th December.
To mark this momentous exhibition, Gail will give a special one-off workshop into his greyscale water painting techniques. He always maintains an openness with whatever graphic medium he chooses, allowing for new or unexpected possibilities to happen during a very creative process.
With his water-based ink paintings, he deals with mistakes by simply discarding the paper and replacing it
with a new sheet. The papers are pages taken from old books, like dictionaries, map books or novels that
he has read.
There is brutality and beauty in equal measures in Kentridge’s work but in this workshop you will focus on his recent Flower and Tree Paintings which are stunning in both scale and richness. There is symbolism and his own memories hidden within these works, but there is also plenty of space for our own experiences and memories to come into play. We will paint as he does onto found printed materials.
You can bring in any books that you are happy to repurpose, and we shall collect a selection from second hand bookstores for us to use.
You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy this session, but you’ll get more from it if you have some experience in painting with watercolours. We limit our class sizes which means that you not only benefit from personal tuition, but also enjoy peer support. So, why not join us on a voyage of discovery as we explore the style of William Kentridge?
