Class details

Join us and explore experimental hand stitch. Amarjeet Nandhra leads a three day course which stretches and challenges your thinking of how you can use hand stitching. Whether you are a beginner or have some experience, this is an opportunity for you to adopt a more experimental approach with embroidery.

Thursdays

24 & 31 March and 7 April

10.30am – 3pm

Limited to 8 artists

Course Fees: Full Price – £210; Retiree Price – £170; Concession Price – £130

Guided by Amarjeet, you will work through exercises to learn a range of stitches and techniques and how to break the rules of traditional embroidery.

The course is suitable for all levels. Amarjeet will introduce beginners to a range of basic hand stitch techniques and encourage them to use non traditional materials. More experienced students will have the opportunity to try out a wide range of experimental stitch techniques and build on current skills.

Before the start of the course we shall provide more guidance about the selection of materials. We aim to try and use and recycle materials we already have in stock.

No matter your level of experience, everyone is welcome to join us to explore experimental hand stitch with Amarjeet.

We provide light refreshments throughout the day, but please bring your lunch. Or you could visit our neighbouring cafes in Dickens Yard – there are lots to choose from.

Materials

Backgrounds to stitch on

  • Coloured background fabrics dyed, printed, plain (light and medium weight)
  • cotton, calico, silk.
  • Vegetable/fruit netting
  • Papers ( brown oiled, maps, book pages )
  • Felt
  • Scrim, bandages,
  • Hessian, sheers

In fact anything just remember you have to get a needle through it!

  • Strips of fabric, plastic bag strips
  • Raffia, ribbon, anything that will go through the needle

Other items

  • Embroidery frame /hoop – It isn’t necessary to choose a large hoop that your whole design will fit inside. Just consider a smaller hoop is easier to hold but means you will have to move the hoop more. Hoops are generally available in sizes from 4 inch to 12 inch diameter.
