Join our six week traditional Chinese painting course for beginners led by William Cai and study Chinese freehand painting with a master.

During the six week course you will learn how to paint the four gentlemen’s flowers:
- Bamboo
- Plum Blossom
- Chrysanthemums
- Orchids
At the start William will introduce you to the tools and materials of traditional Chinese painting; Chinese brushes, rice paper and Chinese inks. After you’ve learned how to hold and control the Chinese brush, you’ll learn how to draw bamboo.
William guides you through the processes so that you begin to master the skills of using the brushes and materials. As you become more confident you will learn how to draw other types of flowers.
By the end of this course you will have mastered the basic skills of Chinese freehand painting and will have a good basis for further study of advanced Chinese painting.
To learn Chinese painting you will need a few specialist tools. William will bring the brushes, inks and extra paper for you to buy, or you can explore the delights of this specialist Chinese supplier, Oriental Arts in Brighton. You’ll need
- an assortment of soft and stiff brushes of different sizes
- ink for Chinese painting
- a box of Chinese colours
- Chinese rice paper
- a small felt blanket : 70 x 50cm
- a small water cup
- a saucer for colour
- a small plate/pallette for colour mixing
