During this waxed surfaces short course we explore the different ways to use wax on paper and fabric. Amarjeet will show us how to use it as a resist to create surface decoration and a medium to change the structure of a surface.

Join us for the first waxed surfaces short course we have run at OPEN.

During the workshop you’ll investigate the different ways wax can be used on paper and fabric; as a resist to create surface decoration, and a medium to alter the structure of a surface.

Initially you will explore pattern and mark making, using a range of wax resist techniques to produce a variety of exciting coloured papers and fabrics. These will provide the basis for your investigations into the properties of wax.

During the course you will be able to experiment with the techniques of translucency, structure and stitch. You’ll work in a dimensional manner, layering, manipulating and constructing your final samples.


We shall supply the following materials:

  • Sewing kit – needles
  • Wax candles
  • A small selection of strong threads
  • Brushes for applying wax
  • Implements that can be used to dip into the wax
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire
  • Wax pots
  • Water pots
  • Masking tape
  • Stapler and staples
  • Bull dog clips
  • Cartridge paper
  • A range of inks
  • Paint brushes
  • Tjanting tools

Please would you bring:

  • A range of light to medium weight fabrics; silk, cotton, printed etc
  • A variety of papers including brown wrapping paper, tissue paper, pages from books ,old envelopes, patterned paper

About the tutor

Amarjeet Nandhra

Amarjeet Nandhra is a practising artist, with training in Graphic Communication,
Print and Textile Art. She has also worked as an Art Director on various independent
short films. As a freelance tutor and lecturer, she has taught a range of courses;
printmaking, mixed media and textiles, at Diploma level, City & Guilds and in Adult
Education. Her teaching career expands over 25 years. Amarjeet is also a member
of Studio 21 textile art and (TSG)Textile Study Group, two of the most exciting textile
art groups.
