This course is designed for learners who have already completed a basic drawing course, and who
are confident and adventurous in outlook.

In a relaxed and informal atmosphere participants will cultivate their repertoire of markmaking, and expand their knowledge of contemporary and historical drawing. The course will involve observational and non-representational drawing, experimental and conventional processes, and will enable development of individual practice.
There will be a continuous appraisal of drawing; what it is, the basic components, and what it can be.
Artists whose practice contains a strong drawn component will be used as reference and inspiration
– examples include Kathe Kollwitz, Egon Schiele, Kiki Smith, David Hockney, Ellen Gallagher, Tacita Dean, Jasper Johns, Vija Celmins, Julie Mehretu.
Learners will be encouraged to bring in source material with personal meaning and interest, and to keep visual journals or sketchbooks to inform their work.
Basic materials will be supplied but learners may wish to supplement with their own preferred items.

About the Tutor

Since as far back as I can remember I’ve drawn, painted and made stuff.

As a child I consumed anything I could find about art, lugging gigantic books home from the library and actually reading them. I first attended art school at age 16, which was far too young, then returned after travelling and raising a family to study for a degree in Fine Art (Mixed Media). My creative career has been diverse and eclectic, including projects such as a seaside tearoom, a printmaking studio, and a spell as a gallery artist at the De La Warr Pavilion. I’ve designed for books, magazines, galleries and shops, and was selected for the Victoria and Albert Museum’s ‘Cherry on the Cake’ works on paper collection. Drawing has always been my mainstay, I believe everyone can do it, and I enjoy sharing my passion with others through teaching and facilitating studio groups. My practice has recently evolved into social engagement, curation and collaboration with ‘outsider’ artists. I divide my time between London and a tiny studio in my caravan in rural East Sussex.
