Intermediate to Advanced Drawing is for people who have completed a basic drawing course and want to develop their personal style.
Fridays
10am – 1pm
9 – 30 October
Course Fee: £80 (£60 concession)
If you have some drawing experience and are confident and adventurous in the way you approach your artwork, you will enjoy this four week course. It is designed to develop your individual practice and involves
- observational drawing
- non-representational drawing
- experimental and conventional processes
- continual assessment
Course tutor Sophie will guide you through a variety of exercises to help you develop your repertoire of mark making. You will be able to measure your progress over the weeks via Sophie’s feedback and assessment of your work.
Throughout the course we refer to many artists whose work contains a strong aspect of drawing. We include:
- Kathe Kollwitz
- Egon Schiele
- Kiki Smith
- David Hockney
- Ellen Gallagher
- Tacita Dean
- Jasper Johns
- Vija Celmins
- Julie Mehretu
Studying their work may help you expand your knowledge of contemporary and historical drawing.
We encourage students to bring in source material that has personal meaning and interest to inform their work. It is also good practice to keep a visual journal.
You have to supply your own materials for this Intermediate to Advanced Drawing course. You will need:
- graphite pencils
- charcoal
- black fineliner and biro
- A3 size cartridge paper
About the Tutor
Sophie Wakefield designs and runs creative tours for groups visiting the Barbican Art Gallery where she is the Schools & Families Guide.
She also teaches art on a freelance basis. Since 2016 she has worked in community settings to support people’s well being through art. She has worked with Chickenshed Theatre, Studio Upstairs, ActionSpace and Claremont Project. She is currently training as an art therapist at Goldsmiths, University of London.
