Petra Haller & Mark Wastell

A rare meeting of rhythm, texture and radical listening, this performance brings together two distinctive voices in improvised music as a percussion duo.

Petra Haller uses tap dance as a percussion instrument within contemporary jazz and improvised music. Dissolving the line between dancer and musician, she places tap at the centre of the ensemble as a driving, responsive rhythmic force. Drawing on traditional jazz, avant-garde practice and interdisciplinary performance, she transforms the floor into a resonant soundboard — shaping intricate dialogues of pulse, space and momentum.

Joining her is Mark Wastell, a pivotal figure in British free improvisation. During the 1990s he was an originator of the New London Silence, a strand of improvisation devoted to softness, microscopic detail and low volume. Since 1996 he has run Confront Recordings, widely regarded as one of the most original and intelligent labels in contemporary avant and improvised music. He also founded Sound 323 (2001–2010), described in The Wire as “an epicentre of much of London’s improvised music,” hosting artists such as Keith Rowe, Derek Bailey, David Toop and Taku Sugimoto.

Together as a percussion duo, Haller and Wastell explore the fragile edges of sound — where footwork meets texture, resonance meets restraint, and silence becomes as charged as impact. Expect a performance of acute listening and fearless spontaneity, unfolding in real time at the threshold between movement and sound.

Partial Wave Child

Stillness Moving Mountain is Partial Wave Child’s second improvised composition. Featuring a new incarnation of the augmented flute, the symbiosis of the acoustic instrument and a purpose built digital software environment. It is a work that explores the tension that exists within Stillness. Where microtonal and micro-textural changes that occur from the variety of extended flute technics: of air sounds, whisper-tones, harmonics, vocalisations and multi-phonics; are drawn out and gently manipulated by the digital sampler. This reductionism in form allows for an exploration of the imperfection of sound. Where the subtlest of gestures in acoustic delivery are digitally expanded upon allowing them to exist and grow within their own right. Where the smallest microtonal shift can develop into new harmonic landscapes. And where seemingly static pulses break apart and reform into a terrain of ever-changing Movement and fluidity. A minute change creates friction, friction builds tension, tension amplifies the smallest of gesture into a shining monolith within the flow of music. Nothing goes unnoticed, everything stands out. https://www.instagram.com/partialwavechild
