The Programme

In this edition we feature sets from

Phil Durrant

Phil Durrant is a multi-instrumentalist improviser, composer and sound artist. As a violinist and member of the “Butcher, Russell & Durrant trio”, he was one of the key exponents of the “group voice approach” style of improvised music. In the late 90s, his trio with Radu Malfatti and Thomas Lehn represented a shift to a more “reductionist” approach.

“My instrumentation for this set is an eBowed dulcimer stick & amplified objects. I will use an eBow to excite the dulcimer stick strings amplified with a contact microphone. By placing additional objects onto the strings I will create a vulnerable sonic a ‘source of uncertainty’.”

Rob Flint/FLOMO

Rob Flint makes art that explores vision and hearing, in galleries and performance spaces. He has made live image projections in Europe, Japan and the UK and collaborated with sonic artists including

  • Steve Beresford
  • Charles Hayward
  • Christophe Charles
  • Gert-Jan Prins
  • Bill Thompson
  • Phil Durrant

In 2019 he performed a spoken-word piece called Like Work at the Venice Bienniale.

FLOMO is a project set up to explore video image and sound in an immersive way. He uses software and analogue tools to create spacious and dream-like combinations of pattern, rhythm, and tone.

Expedient Self

Expedient Self is a one-piece guitar act who flirts with noise rock, drone and ambient. Active since 2019 and based out of Brighton, he uses looping and FX to create dissonance and disharmony, while his basic sound has been described as ‘surfy’ by some listeners.
