Guest Speakers

Ameet Hindocha

For the last 11 years, Ameet Hindocha has been immersed in the study and exploration of Islamic geometric design. Drawing lies at the core of his creative practice, combined with a deep appreciation of paper, ink, wood, pixels, and an insatiable desire to explore and express the beauty of number visually. He moves fluidly between analogue and digital processes.

He sees his work as continuing in the lineage of the geometers and artisans who created the masterpieces of architecture and book arts found across the Islamic world, while extending those possibilities through the tools, materials, and processes available to a modern-day practitioner.

The intention of his teaching practice is to inspire students to discover the traditional skills of geometric construction as fundamental tools for design in the modern world. Drawing these patterns by hand with simple tools is a deeply contemplative process that encourages appreciation of the sophisticated geometry and craftsmanship displayed in the monuments and manuscripts of Islam.

Joumana Medlej

Joumana Medlej is an artist-scholar from Lebanon, working at the intersection of creation and research. After an early career in graphic design and illustration, she found her vocation for the Kufi scripts during the years she assisted a master calligrapher in his Beirut studio.

She went on to specialise in this early calligraphic tradition, from which she derived the visual language of her contemporary art practice. She also developed an expertise in the art technology of the medieval Islamic world. Having abandoned store-bought paints for the old ways of colour-making, Joumana prepares her own art materials using historical techniques, often foraging for supplies. She draws on her practitioner’s experience to translate medieval Arabic handbooks into English and bring the voices of past masters to a general audience.

Joumana is now based in Oxford. Her work is found in private and public collections in Europe, the USA and the Arab world. She’s authored and published books on art technology and on forgotten aspects of the Arabic letters.

Diana Reeves

Diana Reeves is a mathematician and geometric art teacher. She takes inspiration from spotting shapes everywhere and visualising them in a variety of new ways. Deeply motivated by geometry in architecture, she enjoys analysing the patterns of floors, windows, ceilings, and structures from different cultures. Diana is interested in examining the underlying foundations of these forms while embracing the freedom of creative expression through a variety of media and letting go of the need for perfection. She believes that the geometry itself already provides that.

Diana creates visual construction tutorials for a variety of traditional and modern patterns. She is currently analysing a series of Gothic motifs by the British architect Robert Billings, published 175 years ago, which demonstrates how simple circle diagrams can become a source of infinite designs with ever-evolving complexity. Through this work, she hopes students will be able to make connections between each drawing, feel inspired to explore alternatives, and ultimately develop their own patterns and creative processes.
