Fiction for Beginners is a four week online course for people who keen to unlock their creative writing skills.

Learn the key elements of fiction and put them into practice in a friendly, supportive online group. During the course you will learn
- How to come up with ideas
- To make basic decisions regarding genre, point of view and tense
- How to create characters
- To develop the plot using structure and scenes
- The importance of conflict and how to create it in your writing
- The art of showing instead of telling
All you need to join the course is a notebook (paper or IT) and internet connection. Each week we’ll send you support notes and access to a recording of the session.

About the Tutor
Mark Kirkbride studied at Kingston and Oxford. He is the author of three books published by Omnium Gatherum in LA. His novel Game Changers of the Apocalypse was a semi-finalist in the Kindle Book Awards 2019. He’s written across a range of media, including narrative design for a game developer and content creation for an app, but he specialises in fiction.
His short stories have appeared in Under the Bed, Sci Phi Journal, Disclaimer Magazine, Flash Fiction Magazine and So It Goes: The Literary Journal of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library.
Mark is an Arts Award Adviser and a Creative Workshop Tutor for the University for the Creative Arts. He’s also part of the University of Winchester’s pool of lecturers employed on a fixed-term basis.
