Class details

Would you like to develop your oil painting skills and move your artistic practice to a new level? We’ve created a place where you can paint and create art. So, why not join OPEN’s Oil Painting Studio and develop your skills in a friendly and supportive environment?

10am – 1pm

19 January – 9 February inclusive

Course Fee: Full – £110 ; Retiree – £95 ; Concession – £75

Limited to 12 artists

Why join our studio? Our oil painting studio is

  • a place where you can work on your own subject under the guidance of an experienced oil painter and tutor
  • somewhere you can paint in the company of other like minded artists and benefit from peer support
  • grouped into blocks of sessions
  • a place where you have time to plan and develop your painting before bringing it to fruition

Experienced oil painter and tutor, Diana Braybrook, leads the studio. She sets a topic/theme for each block so you can focus on a particular technique and continue to develop your artistic practice in a controlled and enjoyable manner.

You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy OPEN’s Oil Painting Studio, but you do need some painting/drawing experience. You will get more from it, if you’ve some experience in painting with oil paints and enjoy painting under your own steam. We limit the number of artists of twelve which increases the opportunity for discussion and personal tuition.

We shall provide the following equipment for each session:

  • Studio easel, chair and small table
  • Non-toxic painting medium
  • Large single use paper palettes
  • Jam jar for holding wet brushes
  • Space on a drying rack to hold one wet painting per artist between sessions

You need to bring the following materials:

  • Sketches/photos of something memorable that you want to paint – a couple of options would be good
  • Paper and drawing materials for preparatory work – ruler is also useful
  • Stretched canvas or board to paint your picture on – maximum size is 594 x 891 mm (23.4 x 33.1 in)
  • Oil paints
  • Brushes, palette knife/s, old sponge, old credit card
  • Rags or kitchen roll
  • Small pot or jar with lid for painting medium (non-toxic medium provided)
  • Baby wipes for messy fingers
  • Plastic bag to take used brushes home for cleaning
