About the Tutor
Jenny Mitchell is an alumna of the University of Sussex where she is currently Poet in Residence.
She has three collections and has received many awards. Her prize-winning debut collection, “Her Lost Language”, is an exploration of the impact of British transatlantic enslavement on black lives and family dynamics. It combines grounded realism with imaginative empathy on a journey from the Caribbean to Britain. At the heart of the collection is the belief in the power of stories to ‘liberate’ the voice in order to help heal a collective future. She was the Joint Winner of the Geoff Stevens Memorial Poetry Prize.
“Map of a Plantation” is on the syllabus at Manchester Metropolitan University and “Resurrection of a Black Man” contains three prize-winning poems.
Her tribute to Benjamin Zephaniah, “The Day Mr Zephaniah Died”, is on the syllabus at the University of Connecticut.
