Our theme for the five weeks starting on Thursday 13 November is ‘Grisaille’

Grisaille is a technique used by the ‘Old Masters’ from Caravaggio to the Pre Raphaelites. Essentially you do an initial monochromatic painting which includes the full range of darks to lights (values). You let the painting dry before adding colour by using a succession of glazes. Even if you don’t use grisaille often, knowing how to do do this technique gives you a better understanding of relative values and the pigments you use.

Experienced oil painter and tutor, Diana Braybrook, leads the studio. She sets a topic/theme for each block so you can focus on a particular technique and continue to develop your artistic practice in a controlled and enjoyable manner.
You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy OPEN’s Oil Painting Studio, but you do need some painting/drawing experience. You will get more from it, if you’ve some experience in painting with oil paints and enjoy painting under your own steam. We limit the number of artists of twelve which increases the opportunity for discussion and personal tuition.
