Class details
Would you like to develop your oil painting skills and move your artistic practice to a new level? We’ve created a place where you can paint and create art. So, why not join OPEN’s Oil Painting Studio and develop your skills in a friendly and supportive environment? This time we are going to have fun in the last session and use another implement to apply the paint, rather than a paint brush. Tools you might like to try include a painting knife, sponge or rag.

Why use different implements to apply paint?
Using implements other than our usual brushes can be liberating and certainly helps us build a wider repertoire of mark making.
If you decide to buy a painting knife try to choose a really flexible one, as it is much easier to use. It’s worth visiting an art shop to feel them for yourself. If you want to buy online I suggest you look for ‘RGM’ knives – one small and one medium sized knife is enough and be a useful addition to your painting kit.
What surface to use
Please bear in mind that knife painting is best done on a board or stretched canvas. If you don’t want to buy a surface, you could use a piece of cardboard (eg back of old drawing paper pad) so long as you have primed it using a couple of coats of acrylic paint (eg household emulsion).
Why join our studio?
Our oil painting studio is
- a place where you can work on your own subject under the guidance of an experienced oil painter and tutor
- somewhere you can paint in the company of other like minded artists and benefit from peer support
- grouped into blocks of sessions
- a place where you have time to plan and develop your painting before bringing it to fruition
Experienced oil painter and tutor, Diana Braybrook, leads the studio. She sets a topic/theme for each block so you can focus on a particular technique and continue to develop your artistic practice in a controlled and enjoyable manner.
You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy OPEN’s Oil Painting Studio, but you do need some painting/drawing experience. You will get more from it, if you’ve some experience in painting with oil paints and enjoy painting under your own steam. We limit the number of artists of twelve which increases the opportunity for discussion and personal tuition.
